THOUGHTS, NEWS & PRAYERS
An Irish Blessing
By Roma Downey

May the blessing of light be upon you,
light on the outside and light on the inside.
With God's sunlight shining on you,
may your heart glow with warmth like a turf fire
that welcomes friends and strangers alike.
May the light of the Lord shine from your eyes
like a candle in the window,
welcoming the weary traveler.
May the blessing of God's soft rain be on you,
falling gently on your head,
refreshing your soul with the sweetness
of little flowers newly blooming.
May the strength of the winds of Heaven bless you, carrying the rain to wash your spirit clean,
sparkling after, in the sunlight.
May the blessing of God's earth be on you
and as you walk the roads,
may you always have a kind word for those you meet.
May you understand the strength and power of God
in a thunderstorm in winter,
the quiet beauty of creation
and the calm of a summer sunset.
And may you come to realize that
insignificant as you may seem in this great universe,
you are an important part of God's plan.
May He watch over you and keep you safe from harm.

With the festive season so close I want to focus this communiqué on good news.  In health care, McMaster University (Hamilton, Ontario) researchers created blood from skin tissue (Montreal Gazette November 8, 2010).  “Scientists have transformed pinches of human skin into petri dishes of human blood - a major medical breakthrough that could yield new sources of blood for transfusions after cancer treatments or surgery.”  This personalizing production of blood would help reduce the likelihood of rejection.
In spite of industry opposition, the federal government has now followed through on a two year promise to add Bisphenol A to the country's list of toxic substances.  E-mails or letters of appreciation should be sent to the prime minister.
Federal Minister of Health Leona Aglukkaq has announced $3 million in medical research funding.  Funding is aimed at issues such as solving the mystery of childhood obesity and how it impacts children.  I encourage you to send The Hon. Aglukkaq an e-mail or letter commending her on this action.
Finally, an education good news story comes from Saskatchewan.  In her communiqué Saskatchewan Provincial Council Chairperson of Education and Health Marge Szabo writes, “The province of Saskatchewan has invested $885,000 in 18 new pre-kindergarten programs.  These programs have a positive impact on a child's development and they support early literacy and student achievement.  Saskatchewan now has 230 pre-kindergarten programs benefiting up to 3,680 children.”

Dignity for All – a campaign for a poverty-free Canada
This multi-year, non partisan campaign to addresses poverty in communities across Canada
is built on the following shared beliefs:
•  freedom from poverty is a human right
•  all people are entitled to social and economic security
•  work to eliminate poverty arises out of a faith commitment
This campaign brings together organizations, faith groups and individuals from across the country in a call for federal government action on poverty and includes a national poverty elimination strategy. The Dignity for All campaign is a made-in-Canada means of exemplifying what Catholic social teaching calls “the preferential option for the poor.”
Four hundred and fifty-five groups, including the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops, Canadian Catholic Organization for Development and Peace, Society of St. Vincent de Paul, and many other religious orders have signed on to the campaign support of Dignity for All. The national executive has decided to sign onto the campaign as well as a show of support for the elimination of poverty, which has long been of League interest. In addition to the involvement of national organizations, over 7,400 individuals have signed on – I am one of them! Go the Web site and see this amazing undertaking. Founded by Citizens for Public Justice and Canada Without Poverty, there is a growing network of support for Dignity for All with the involvement of faith, social justice, labour, and human rights organizations representing hundreds of thousands of people from across Canada.
